Historic antiquities and modern art will feature in Mitchells antiques and fine art sale next Thursday and Friday.

A substantial private collection of rare and particularly old antiquities, including some from Elizabethan and Jacobean times, will go under the hammer, along with fine artworks from modern artists such as Prunella Clough, Shani Rhys James and John Wells.

Saleroom director and auctioneer Mark Wise said of the private antiques collection of 400 lots, from the estate of a late collector in the Furness area: "It’s a fabulous collection featuring items that are extremely scarce today. It’s also one of the finest and most historically interesting collections we have sold to date at Mitchells."

Highlights from the collection include a rare Georgian painted bone child's alphabet table value at £500 to £800.

A Jacobite Japanned steel tobacco box with an internal portrait of Prince Charles Edward Stuart is expected to fetch £350 to £450.

Antiques from the Elizabethan era include a pair of turned, gadrooned and carved oak candlesticks dating from around 1580, which are expected to make £250 to £300.

An Elizabethan oak panel carved with a figure probably representing the Queen has an estimate of £500 to £800.

Other items include two 17th century embroidered stumpwork pictures of King Charles II with courtiers in exile and Queen Catherine with attendants, expected to reach £1,000 to £1,500.

A William and Mary oyster veneered cushion framed wall mirror, with original mirror plate, is expected to fetch £700 to £1,000.

A 19th century silver-mounted coromandelwood document box is set to make £500 to £800.

Four Fishermen, an oil-on-board painting by British artist Prunella Clough (1919-1999) has been valued at £5,000 to £8,000.

A signed oil-on-canvas painting by Welsh artist Shani Rhys James (born 1953), entitled The Bustle, is expected to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000.

Chalice, an oil-on-card painting by British artist John Wells (1907-2000) is also expected to make between £3,000 and £5,000.

The auction will also feature ceramics, glassware, jewellery and watches, silver and metalware, objects of art and collectors’ items as well as clocks, barometers, mirrors and antique furniture.
