Lidl's “supermarket of the future” will open to a fanfare next Thursday.

A saxophonist will play as Maryport mayor Linda Radcliffe, Allerdale mayor Celia Tibble and Allerdale councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes cut the ribbon for the new supermarket on Curzon Street.

There will also be a magician to entertain anyone waiting for the opening at 8am.

The 2,470sq m store – one of the largest in the country – has created up to 40 jobs and boasts state-of-the-art facilities including an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing facilities, customer toilets, baby- changing facilities and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

There will be a number of opening discounts on offer.

A Lidl spokeswoman said the supermarket “marks a substantial investment in Maryport and forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion plans in the UK which will see its existing store portfolio of 630 stores increase to up to 1,500”.

David Murphy, Lidl UK’s regional head of property, said: “We would like to thank all those

who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl to Maryport. It is wonderful for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award-winning products to the local community.”

The arrival of the supermarket has meant changes to the road layout on Curzon Street. Two turning lanes are being created for traffic travelling from Netherhall Corner and Workington to turn into Lidl and the Spar garage.

A traffic refuge is being installed to help pedestrians cross the road.

The existing pavement, on the Lidl side of the road, will also be altered to allow vehicle access.
