West Cumbrian firm Carvetii launches its first Papua New Guinean coffee this month.

It is called Virgin Mountain and will be made of beans grown in the Pacific nation’s Nori Kori valley.

The beans are grown on small plantations in an area which is difficult to reach, meaning the firm has depended on local “coffee collectors”.

“The coffee which goes into this particular lot is sold onto Ben Alike, a local coffee collector who is working closely with the farmers to ensure the quality of the coffee continues to improve,” said a spokesman for Carvetii, which has a roastery in Embleton, Cockermouth.

“This coffee was sourced by Mercanta the Coffee Hunters, a coffee broker with whom we have a long-standing relationship. Mercanta has been at the forefront of speciality coffee since 1996.

"All their business is done at a fixed price, above the cost of production, with an eye towards sustainability and outright, reliable prices for producers.

"This, combined with their diligence in seeking out the best coffees the world has to offer, is how they’ve built their stellar reputation.”
