A new sweet shop in Cockermouth is proving a big hit with young and old customers.

The Sweetie Jar has opened on Main Street, in what used to be Pure Touch Beauty. It stocks a huge range of sweets and ice cream. There are also plans for a milkshake machine.

The shop is owned by Jackie Allen, of Cockermouth, and Amanda Nelson, of Whitehaven.

The jars of colourful sweets have triggered lots of happy memories.

Jackie said: “We wanted to create an old fashioned sweet shop.

“There has been a great response and lots of older people have been delighted to see sweets they haven’t come across for years. Their faces light up, it’s lovely!”

The women met while working at Harrison’s Butchers, a few doors away.

Jackie worked there for nine years and Amanda was there for about 18 months.

“We wanted to do something a little bit different. I have always wanted to run my own business so when the opportunity came up we thought we should go for it. So far, so good,” said Amanda.

The shop offers party bags and wedding favours and is open from Monday to Saturday.

“It’s great to be opening a new shop in Cockermouth. The town seems to be getting back on its feet and we’ve had lots of support,” said Jackie.
