West Cumbria's Tesco stores will stop 24-hour trading.

Its Workington and Whitehaven supermarkets are among 76 branches that will no longer be open 24 hours a day.

The reduction in opening hours at the New Bride Road store in Workington and Whitehaven's Bransty Row supermarket will be come into effect between March 14 and April 11.

Instead of being open for 24 hours, the stores will close their doors between midnight and 6am.

Tesco started 24-hour trading in 1996 and currently operates around 400 stores which are open 24 hours a day.

It says the move to reduce hours will mean staff can spend more time filling the shelves overnight, which in turn will lead to improved availability of products and better looking stores when the doors are opened to customers each morning.

Tony Hoggett, Tesco's retail director, said: "We're always thinking about how to serve our customers better in each of our stores and with the growth of online grocery shopping, these stores saw very few customers during the night."

The change has been attributed to demand for night-time shopping waning and online purchasing growing.
