Workington's abandoned covered market is up for sale.

The Victorian building, off Portland Street, will go under the hammer, with a guide price of more than £60,000, at an auction next month.

The market, in the town’s conservation area, has been empty for more than 50 years.

It was hoped in 2008 that the eyesore would be transformed into three two-bedroom homes and nine small commercial units after a planning application was lodged with Allerdale council, but the plans never went ahead.

In 2004, neighbours called in then Workington MP Sir Tony Cunningham after asbestos fibre was discovered in its roof.

At the time, Allerdale council pledged to take enforcement action against the owner.

Impact Housing bought the building but it is not known if the housing association still owns it or if it was sold on.

The building will be at auction on September 15 at Carlisle Racecourse with Auction House Cumbria.
