Detailed plans for 22 homes in Brigham which sparked a row over affordable housing look set to be approved.

Washington Homes Ltd has outline planning permission to build the homes at Lawson Garth.

The company faced a backlash after trying to remove affordable housing from its plan, stating that it would make the development unviable.

The firm has now amended its plans though, agreeing to provide four three-bedroom low-cost homes.

The county council is calling for the company to pay more than £70,000 towards providing extra places at the village school or meeting the cost of transporting children to other schools.

It is also asking for £20,900 towards road improvements, and £7,500 to fund a 30mph speed limit in front of the development.

The full application for a housing development at Lawson Garth will go before Allerdale Council’s development panel on Tuesday.

It has been amended since an earlier application prompted many objections.

Other changes have been made to the plans, including a reduction in the height of three bungalows and some fencing.

Additional tree planting has also been provided.

Allerdale Council planning officials said the changes were an improvement to the plan and have recommended that the application be approved.

The council’s development panel will decide on the proposal.

There were more than 50 letters of objection following the developer's decision to remove affordable housing from its plan submitted earlier in the year.

Bruce Mumford, of High Rigg, had objected, saying: "The provision of affordable housing in this development is essential to preserve the social and age distribution in a village that to date has been well balanced."

Speaking this week he said: "I'm glad the plans have been amended.

"The arguments they made to remove the community sweetener were so pathetic."

They are set to be considered on Tuesday.
