Plans for 650 homes to be built on Workington's Corus Steel Works site are due to take a step forward.

Persimmon Homes has been granted permission by Allerdale council to build two, three and four-bedroom houses and two-bedroom apartments on the 20-acre site.

The council's development panel is due to discuss today the developer's request to remove conditions on predicted CO2 emissions, on site renewable energy initiatives, a £50,000 scheme for public realm works linking the site to the town centre and to vary conditions on highway access and the provision of a bus service.

This relates to phase one of the plans, which is for 225 homes.

A spokeswoman for the developer said: "The first thing that will happen on the site is a comprehensive programme of remediation works.

"Subject to planning permission, the company envisages construction starting on site later this year, with the first houses ready in the first half of 2017.

"At this stage, Persimmon Homes is only applying in detail for the houses and associated open space.

"Other aspects of the overall scheme will be determined in future phases."

The site is currently derelict and was partly cleared following the demolition of the steelworks in 2008.
