Maryport was once a factory town and one of the largest of those factories was Electroflo Meter.

Shoes, foodstuffs and children’s wear were just some of the finished products that left Maryport.

Electroflo, at its height, employed between 500 and 600 people who created electrical measuring instruments.

The factory, on the town's Solway Industrial Estate, opened in about 1948 and came to Maryport because the managing director of the parent factory in London, was Burton Dunglinson, who came from Bassenthwaite and wanted to bring something to the area.

As well as the factory he also brought expertise in the form of managers and foremen, including Pat O’Shea, of Crosby, who provided these photographs and memories.

Pictured in one of the photographs is Bill Foskett, one of the last managers, who died last year.

Pat said he only discovered after Mr Foskett’s death, that he had been in Bomber Command during the war.

He said the factory was a wonderful place to work both for its conditions and colleagues.

He also remembered the annual Christmas parties for children, sponsored by management but very much organised by Olive Ellis, the canteen manager.
