Sellafield's Calder Gate will be reopened at lunchtimes following its controversial recent closure, site bosses have announced.

From Monday, the gate will be reopened from 11am to 1pm.

The reopening will be on a temporary basis, Sellafield Ltd adds, and discussions will be held with local traders ahead of the lunchtime restrictions being reintroduced in the future.

It was reported in September that shop owners, particularly those in Seascale and Gosforth close to Calder Gate, are bemoaning a drop in trade since Sellafield Ltd took the decision to close the gate to vehicles from 8.30am daily.

The company said the decision had been taken on security grounds, with vehicles only able to access the site’s Main Gate after 8.30am.

A Sellafield Ltd spokesman said: “This temporary measure is designed to allow the local community time to adjust to the new arrangements.

“During this time, we are inviting local traders to share with us ideas of how they can better access customers on the Sellafield site once lunchtime restrictions at Calder Gate are reinstated.

“Security arrangements are kept under continuous review at Sellafield and are subject to change at any time.”
