A collection of taxidermy will be the highlight of a sporting sale at Mitchells in Cockermouth next Saturday.

A wild boar head is estimated to sell for between £180 and £220, a Murray of Carnforth 13 point red stag is valued at £120 to £180 and a Rowland Ward eland head, the largest breed of antelope in the world, has an estimate of £100 to £150.

Other important items in the taxidermy section are a rowan antelope head attributed to Rowland Ward valued at £100 to £150, a pair of North American elk antlers estimated at £140 to £160 and two cape buffalo skull mounts valued between £100 and £180.

Of local interest in the collectables section will be a collection of postcards of the local fell packs including early Melbreak Foxhounds and rare images of the funeral of Tommy Dobson, of the Eskdale Ennerdale Foxhounds.

Other items include a collection of seven Swaine hunting horns ranging from £80 to £500, one in silver engraved for the Waveney Harriers, and a banded copper and silver plate horn.

The section also includes several items belonging to Dennis Barrow, of the Ullswater Foxhounds, including a silver 25-year service hunting horn valued at £400 to £600, seven other hunting horns and a mounted fox mask, fox number 105 from the record season in 1974 to 1975 when 126 foxes where caught.

The gun section has a WC Scott and Son of London sidelock shotgun with Damascus barrels estimated at £1,500 to £2,000, a Charles Boswell sidelock side by side shotgun with an estimate of £700 to £1,000, an Armstrong of Newcastle boxlock ejector valued at £300 to £500 and three Cogswell and Harrison shotguns ranging in price from £100 to £500.

The best of the air rifles is an early BSA Lincoln Jeffries Model D air rifle in .177 with an estimate of £120 to £180.

The fishing section features a number of modern and antique Hardy rods, modern Sage rods and reels by Hardy.

Lots can be viewed in person at Mitchells between 3pm and 7pm next Friday and from 8.30am until the sale starts at 10am the following day.
