Community spirit and teamwork helped a Keswick supermarket to get back on its feet.

Booths was devastated last year as water swamped the popular store on Tithebarn Street, destroying everything in its path.

It took months for the shop to finally reopen as the damage was so severe, but manager Darren Jacques said the way the community pulled together made the whole experience easier.

“The Keswick community has come a long way since the floods last December,” he said.

“The damage from Storm Desmond was extensive and took many weeks to deal with, but all credit must go to our store and estate teams who worked tirelessly to get Booths open as soon as they could.

“From a terrible event came a great deal of community spirit and teamwork, and we are delighted with our new store, which was rebuilt from the bottom up.”

Booths reopened in March and bosses hope that this Christmas will see bumper sales.

Other traders in the town are hoping to see a boost in their business.

Roy Johnson, of Special Expressions and also chairman of Keswick Retailers Association, said even though his shop was not flooded there was a knock-on effect for many businesses in the town as the custom was not there.

“It’s still early days so we’re not going to know for a couple of weeks whether trade’s going to get better,” he said. “We’re all hoping it does. The whole year has been challenging, I’m looking forward to a prosperous 2017.”
