Everyone's heard of musical chairs, in Cockermouth it’s musical shops!

Livy Bremner owns Riff Raff, a children’s clothes shop, which was based on Main Street – until the December floods.

She was given temporary accommodation in 21 Market Place, which she moved into in January. She had hoped to be back on Main Street this month.

Susan Seekings, who recently opened Dachshund, a vintage interiors shop, was meant to be moving into 21 Market Place in April but agreed to move into smaller premises next door until Livy moved out in June.

Livy has since made the decision to move into different premises on Main Street, which are being used by The New Bookshop on a temporary basis, but will not be able to do so until September. She has now swapped shops with Susan.

The women recruited various people to help move all their goods on Saturday and are now settling into their new bases.

“The move was rather comical. Livy had recruited a crack team to help out,” said Susan.

“It’s a relief to finally be where I planned to be, there’s much more room for the shop and workshop.”

Livy has had to find space for boxes of school uniforms. “It’s been quite a challenge but you’ve got to be positive.”

Livy used to live in Gote Road, where she flooded three times. When her shop flooded in December she was on holiday in Mexico and had left her 18-year-old daughter, Cathee, in charge.

“It was stressful as we knew what was happening. Cathee knew what to do and some of my friends went down to the shop and got as much out as they could,” said Livy.

“We lost all the fixtures and fittings but managed to save all the school uniforms.”
