Pub chain Wetherspoon has scrapped plans for a beer garden in Workington for the third time.

Just two months ago it launched its third attempt to create the garden at the Henry Bessemer on New Oxford Street, but these were withdrawn last week.

The first application lodged last year focused on land to the right of the building, but was shelved.

In April this year, the company unveiled plans for a controversial new scheme which would have seen the first floor of the premises, which used to be used as a nightclub, turned into an al-fresco space for 70 people.

Weeks later, the company shelved those plans and went back to the drawing board.

An application was then submitted in July to turn a storage area behind the pub into a beer garden, but was pulled last week.

This third application did not have any objections against it like the previous one.

Richard Cain, environmental protection officer, said: "Environmental health has concerns in relation to noise from the beer garden."

He asked for a detailed noise impact assessment to be approved by the council before the development takes place.

It is not known why the pub firm pulled these latest plans, but an email from the architects working on the scheme suggests a future application will be submitted.

The company also withdrew plans for a rooftop beer garden at Whitehaven's Bransty Arch earlier this month.
