It was announced last month that JD Wetherspoon wanted to transform the first floor of its Henry Bessemer pub on New Oxford Street into an al fresco space for its customers.
A planning application had been submitted to Allerdale council, but has now been withdrawn.
A spokesman for the company said: “We are still keen on the rooftop beer garden.
“We are considering some alternative options to the original plan and a new planning application will be made in due course.”
The plans included transforming part of the first floor, which used to be a popular nightclub, into a beer garden for 70 people.
It wanted to keep the dome and facade of the building, which used to be the Rendevous cinema, and replace the windows on the front and the left side of the building with a balustrade.
Last year, the pub chain submitted a planning application for a beer garden and smoking area on the ground floor of its Workington branch.
It wanted to create the space to the right of the building, but the plans were withdrawn soon afterwards.
