Workington's branch of HMV has celebrated its first birthday in style by landing an award.

The store was given the company’s Top of the Shops prize and beat more than 100 branches of HMV and Fopp to win.

Stores across the country are rated by senior figures in the company on how their shop floor and stockrooms are presented, cleanliness, staff uniform, staff knowledge, customer service and teamwork.

The Top of the Shops award is given to the store which receives the highest overall marks.

Paul Mitchell, assistant manager of the Workington store, said: “It’s brilliant. We only re-opened just over a year ago and we’ve come a long way.

“I think we’ve made massive strides over the last year and the response we’ve had from the general public and customers has been very positive. The award is the icing on the cake.”

The store will be given a trophy and the staff will be treated to a trip to see the Game of Thrones film set in Croatia.

The Workington HMV closed in 2013 but reopened last September in its original premises.

The company became the owner of Fopp in 2007, a chain of stores selling entertainment products.
