Workington MP Sue Hayman has met with the Government to raise her concerns about broadband in Cumbria.

Mrs Hayman met with Ed Vaisey, the minster responsible for broadband delivery and Clive Selley, the chief executive of BT Openreach.

Mrs Hayman said: "It was good to be able to put my concerns about the rollout of broadband in Cumbria, particularly in isolated rural areas, to the minister and to Mr Selley.

"They informed me that they are looking at a mix of technology in order to be able to reach 99 per cent of properties with 10MB broadband.

"However, there needs to be a plan that is commercially sensible. They wish to achieve this as close to 2020 as possible, which I welcome.

“It seems likely that the final one per cent of properties will receive coverage through satellite broadband rather than conventional means.

"In addition, BT is looking at working with EE to erect additional phone masts, eliminating more of our 'not-spots' where there is no telephone reception or 3G and 4G internet coverage.

"I will do everything I can to work with the government and BT to ensure that all of my constituents can access a good broadband connection in their homes and businesses.

"It’s vital for our economy that improving connectivity is at the top of our agenda."
