The £3 million project was started earlier this year and was originally due to be finished by the end of this year.
Part of the new car park was opened a few weeks ago and contractors hope to have the rest of the car park completed by Christmas, with 140 parking spaces and covered bicycle stand.
The entrance to the station will see new pedestrian zones, drop-off points and bus terminal.
A new road junction will also be created from the A597 with a right turning lane.
The project is one of three transport schemes to be funded from a £7.8 million pot of cash by Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund.
John Slee, project manager at the firm, said: “It has been quite a challenge as we have had to deal with contaminated ground and pumping surface water.”
James Carruthers, of Cumbria County Council, added: “The former brownfield site will provide better rail access and encourage more people to use sustainable travel in the west of the county.”
