Yankees bar in Workington has been serving pints and welcoming revellers for 30 years.

The bar opened in 1986 after Glenys and Brian Walker bought a terraced house on Washington Street and converted it.

They named it after Brian's grandfather, who was known as Yankee Walker, and sons Kurtis, 44, and Kent, 42, have helped run the family business through the years, serving for a time as managers.

Glenys, 70, said: "I remember opening it up with two young lasses and we went from strength to strength.

"We had a jukebox and we've progressed with what people wanted and we've gone with the flow.

"We're delighted that we're still here. We've really enjoyed it.

"Workington and the public have been good to us over the years."

The bar currently employs 28 members of staff and regularly hosts live entertainment.

It is currently managed by Julie Thomas and Carol McAllister.

Glenys also used to run The Globe Inn in Hensingham and The Ship Inn at Harrington.

Yankees will host three days of birthday celebrations this weekend.

The fun gets under way on Friday night with music from Miss D and The Mustangz from 11.30pm.

On Saturday, a vinyl night will take place from 8pm and on Sunday, eight-piece band Misfits will perform from 6pm with a guest appearance from DJ Father Warwick.

Roisin Duxbury, kitchen manager, who has worked at the bar for nine years, said: "It's absolutely fantastic and it's been great working here. We're like one big family."

Annabelle Porter, 25, of Ennerdale Avenue, Workington, and Kerry Surtees, 27, of Calva Park, Seaton, are both regular customers.

Annabelle said: "It's definitely an asset to the town.

"I'm pleased for them that they're celebrating 30 years. It's one of the best, if not the best pub in Workington."

Kerry said: "I've got a lot of good memories and I've had some fun times."
