West Ham United..2

(Pre-season friendly)

A large number of fans were disappointed on Saturday when West Ham arrived at Southbury Road for their pre-season friendly without any of their first team stars.

The main Hammers squad had played at Woking on Friday night but E's supporters were still expecting more than the combination of reserve and youth team players who offered the opposition.

Despite the anti-climax, both teams nevertheless played their part in an entertaining match.

Enfield made a dream start after three minutes, when a Dunwell cross found Sammy Cooper who shot past Boetang in the West Ham net to give the home side the lead.

The Hammers fought back well and only some good saves from Andy Pape kept them at bay until the 34th minute when the equaliser finally came after a mistake from Annon at the back.

But the E's refused to roll over and Cooper and Dunwell combined again to restore their lead just before the break.

This time it was Dunwell who got the final touch with a powerful header to make it 2-1 with Enfield looking much the sharper of the two sides.

Moving into the second half the game continued to swing from one end to another before the Hammers scored a hotly disputed goal on the hour which the E's players felt was off-side.

Enfield continued to apply most of the pressure with Danny Alleyne and John Morgan both going close to snatching another goal.

With just a minute left the decider finally arrived, Grant Cooper applying the killer touch from close range as he headed home the rebound after Scott Holding had hit the woodwork.

Earlier in the week a very young Enfield side travelled to Leyton Pennant and, despite a sterling performance, went down to a 2-0 defeat.

A number of the youngsters will no doubt feature in Gary Calder's plans for the season as they showed they could more than hold their own against well organised opposition.
