Seventy-five new homes could be built in High Harrington.

Story Homes wants to build a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes on 2.73 hectares of land west of Main Road, between Whins Farm and Springfield Avenue.

It is seeking outline planning permission from Allerdale council.

The firm has agreed to buy the site, which is currently used for grazing.

Rough plans show seven areas of residential development, along with open spaces and a playground, separated by roads and private drives.

A spokeswoman for Story Homes said: “This application seeks to establish the principle of residential development at High Harrington.

“The scheme will help to address the current shortfall of much-needed affordable and market housing in Workington.

“This site is well related to the suburb of High Harrington and is contained within the existing built development there. It offers direct access onto the road and public transport network.”

She said the development would create 100 jobs and generate £8m of investment for the local economy. A start date for building work would depend on detailed planning applications being approved later.

Residents of Main Road, Springfield Avenue and Kiln Green Avenue who live nearest the site have been informed of the plans by Allerdale council.

Public consultation will run until July 3.

Meanwhile, Story Homes hopes to start work this year on a 46-home development at Great Clifton, with the first sales expected early next year.

Its plans for 150 homes in Stainburn are awaiting determination by Allerdale council. They were resubmitted following changes to government planning guidelines, after being turned down in March.
