Plans to turn Workington’s former Derwent Bookshop into a cafe that could seat up to 100 people have been submitted to Allerdale council.

An application has been made for a change of use to the Finkle Street building.

Applicant Yucel Denli, 29, who owns Sultan Kebabs in Washington Street, said he was thinking of a cafe or restaurant.

He said he had not yet finalised his plans and would not open straight away if planning permission was granted.

Mr Denli added: “I am leaning towards a cafe that does full English breakfasts.

“I have lived in Workington for 14 years and I know the area and people very well.”

The plan includes 7am to 7pm opening for seven days a week, including bank holidays. The cafe or restaurant could be spread over two floors, and Mr Denli’s agent Ken Thompson said it could cater for up to 100 people.

Two letters of objection have been sent to the council from residents who feel there are enough places to eat in Finkle Street and that a new business would add to the permanent smell of food there.
