Mess strike at Sellafield

More than 150 workers have taken unofficial strike action at Sellafield in a dispute about changing facilities.

Staff at Hertel, a scaffolding contractor at the nuclear plant, walked out on Wednesday and will not return until Monday.

David Massey, human resources director for Hertel UK and Ireland, said: “We are disappointed that the 170 employees at Sellafield have decided to take this action regarding a dispute which arose from an issue relating to their mess and changing facilities.

“We addressed their concerns and rectified the problem within an hour of it being brought to our attention.

“The decision to take strike action until Monday is unofficial and has not been through the agreed grievance process we have with the unions.”

Have your say

Unions agreed to proceedures for strike action so the members should adhere to them. If the workers are not union members then sack them, sack them as well if they are union members for breaking agreements.
