A Seaton woman’s creative side has been brought out through her new business making cakes.

Debbie Louise Basnett, 33, of Meadow Vale, has set up Custom Cakes by Debbie Louise.

She will run the venture from the home she shares with husband Kevin, 40, and sons Jack, seven, Harry, five, and Thomas, two.

Mrs Basnett set up the business after getting a good response to making cakes for friends.

She said: “I started making cakes for my brother Mark Needham about 15 years ago when he was really little and I’ve always made my sons’ birthday cakes.

“When I’d had my sons I gave up work at HSBC and Sellafield Visitor Centre to look after them because I didn’t want to put them into childcare.

“I was desperate to start a hobby and my husband encouraged me to start a sugarcraft course at St Joseph’s School and I’ve been going ever since.

“A friend asked me one day to make a cake for her daughter and it snowballed from there.”

Mrs Basnett, who went to Netherhall School in Maryport and studied at Northumbria University, added: “I do most of my decorating at night when the boys are in bed.

“I would recommend other mums who want to set up their own business to go for it and follow their dreams.”
