New West Cumbrian horse business launches

A new livery and equestrian centre has opened near Workington.
Carol Parker, and daughters, Rebecca, 18, and Rachel, 19, of Tallentire, near Cockermouth, have started the business at Cumberland Lodge, Winscales, where they will offer stabling, riding lessons, horse jumping and show events.
The mother-and-daughter team previously ran the cafe at the Lakeland Equestrian Centre, Dearham, before it was forced to close due to an outbreak of strangles disease – the horse equivalent of foot and mouth.
Mrs Parker said: “There are already 12 horses in the stables despite the fact that the official opening is not until Sunday.”
She said they will mark the launch with a day of entertainment, polo matches and demonstrations.
The Lakeland Equestrian Centre officially closed its doors for good this week as a result of the disease, which was found last December, and mounting council taxes.
Sarah Richardson, 22, who ran the livery, said the centre never recovered from the disease which had put the stables and its 20 horses into isolation until it cleared.
Ms Richardson, who began as a stablehand at the centre aged 16, said: “It just got too much. I tried everything but decided I would have to close. “

Lakeland equestrian centre HAS NOT shut its doors and we are still open as a livery yard holding indoor jumping and shows,secondly strangles IS NOT the equine equivalent of foot and mouth and thirdly we have recovered from last years strangles and all horses and our yard have a full bill of health!

about time we had a decent riding school in west cumbria! its a bit of a pain going up into the lakes all the time and will look forward to going here. I wish them all the best
