A troubled Workington club will go up for auction next month, more than two years after it was closed down by police.

The William Street Club will go under the hammer at Carlisle Racecourse on October 4.

Offering the guide price of £45,000 or more, Auction House Cumbria said the club, with a floor space of 3,770 square feet, offered “development potential” for a variety of uses including residential.

The club was shut down in September 2010 after police were called out 13 times in eight weeks to reports of street brawls, assaults, noise and loud music.

Allerdale council revoked its licence after a hearing. The club later lost an appeal against the council’s decision.

The club was run as The William Street Private Members Club Ltd from October 2008 and had five different premises supervisors in its two years.

Before that it was Workington Labour Club, but that closed in September 2008 after concern about the way it was being run.

A meeting of club members was due to be held on Monday. The club’s representative declined to comment.
