Workington clothes store closes with loss of 13 jobs

Workington's Peacocks store closed down suddenly last night.
The clothes shop, on Murray Road, shut its doors with the loss of 13 jobs.
Kaisa Kamppuri, 20, of Mirehouse, Whitehaven, was the last shopper in the store.
“I didn’t realise the shop was closing down. I went in to buy some leggings and the staff started to lock the doors,” she said.
“I think it’s a shame that another shop is shutting down in the town.”
A spokesman for KPMG, joint administrators of Peacocks, confirmed that Edinburgh Woollen Mill, had acquired 388 stores and concessions, as well as the business headquarters and logistic functions in Wales.
The Workington store was one of the remaining 224 stores that were not included in the sale.
Chris Laverty, joint administrator and restructuring partner at KPMG, said: “While it is unfortunate that redundancies have been necessary, we are pleased that we have been able to preserve the majority of the business and jobs.
“Like many other retailers, Peacocks suffered from a decline in consumer spending due to the tough economic conditions and this, combined with a surplus of stores and unsustainable capital structure led to the business becoming financially unviable.”
The closure comes only two weeks after fashion chain Bonmarche, on Ivison Lane, announced its closure after 17 years of trading in the town.

I wonder if it would be large enough for a H&M.

The loss of jobs in the area has a knock on effect.Even people with "secure" shop jobs are being made to work contracted hours and the extra hours are not being covered.Workington need to attract better high street stores.The young ones want primark and that inbetween age of men just want somewhere to shop.There are non geared up for the 35-50 age group.
