Tackling racism in sports

WEST Cumbrian students were helping to tackle racism this week.
Students at Lakes College West Cumbria, at Lillyhall, attended a talk by Workington Town player Stephen Dawes, and Marnie Jackson, a community officer for the team. They talked to students about racism in sport.
The event was part of Cumbria Constabulary’s Respect Week aimed at raising awareness of issues in the community.
Local officers and Police Community Support Officers from the Workington Neighbourhood Policing Team, including PCSO Sam Adams and Joanne Philip, with representatives from the college, are offering support and guidance to West Cumbrians while raising awareness of the detrimental effects of nuisance behaviour.
The PCSOs have taken group tutorial sessions focusing on behavioural issues such as bullying, learning to value difference, cultures and anti-racism.
Staff have been wearing t-shirts for the event with the Give Respect Get Respect logo designed by National Diploma art student Lynne Hallett.
