Cumbria's crime commissioner Peter McCall braved the rain and went out on the beat with officers in Workington today.

He took to the streets with PC James Graham and Superintendent Gary Slater who are both based at Workington police station.

Mr McCall's visit to Workington is part of a programme to spend time with the force across the county to get an idea of what police officers experience on the frontline and the role they play.

He said: "The key part of this job is representing the people of Cumbria in any way I can and the only sensible way to that is to see what goes on on the ground.

"It's interesting for me to get out and meet as many people as I can.

"It's one thing to read reports, but you never really get a feel for a place unless you see it yourself.

"I've always adopted the view that to understand a job you've got to meet the people who are delivering it.

"It's for me to understand the job, the people delivering it and the issues in Cumbria."

Mr McCall held a public surgery at the town's Carnegie Theatre on Finkle Street this afternoon.

He was elected into the role last month.
