Five people have been arrested on suspicion of affray after an incident in a Workington residential area.

A 25-year-old man was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven following the incident at Findlay Place, off Brook Street. 

His injuries were described as not life-threatening.

Police were called at the scene at 3.30pm on Sunday, where a number of people were involved in the incident.

Three women aged 26, 28, and 49 and a 25-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of affray.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.

Around 10 police cars and vans descended on the area. 

Officers wearing latex gloves were at the scene after the incident, picking up evidence from the green area in front of the flats. 

More than 20 neighbours were out on the streets after police cars pulled up. 

One said: "I saw a man with a baseball bat outside the flats on the corner of Findlay Place. 

"I can't believe the amount of police that arrived. We had no idea what was going on."

A police spokeswoman said: "Objects were used during the incident, but I cannot confirm what they were and a vehicle received damage."

They are all due to answer bail on June 10.
