Hate crimes in Cumbria increased in the months following the Brexit vote, it has been revealed.

A total of 50 incidents were reported to Cumbria police in the months July to September 2016 - a 14 per cent rise on the number reported in the previous quarter of April to June.

The highest number was reported by Dorset police, with 104 incidents signalling a 100 per cent increase.

In the City of London, 25 incidents were reported - a seven per cent fall from the quarter before the June 23 vote.

Police forces in England and Wales can class five types of racially or religiously aggravated offences as hate crimes. They include assault with injury, assault without injury, harassment, public fear, alarm or distress and other criminal damage.
