A man who wounded a woman in West Cumbria has been warned he is likely to be jailed.

Michael Carlton, 50, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today via a video link from prison in front of Recorder Kevin Grice.

Carlton admits both unlawfully wounding Victoria Ritchie, and also making threats to kill her. Both offences were said to have been committed in Distington on September 6 although no details about them were given during the short hearing.

Recorder Grice ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report, and adjourned the case.

Carlton, of Church Close, Distington, is due to be sentenced at the crown court on November 14. In the meantime he was remanded in custody.

He was told by the judge that in view of other serious violent offences on his criminal record, a lengthy immediate jail term was "almost certain".
