A Workington man appeared in court after allegedly leaving another man with life-threatening injuries.

Daniel Dryden, 30, of West Ghyll Place, appeared in front of magistrates in Workington yesterday.

He spoke only to confirm his name and did not enter a plea.

Andrew Travis, prosecuting, said Dryden and the victim had arranged to meet in Wastwater Avenue in the early hours of Sunday to have a fight.

The victim was left with life-threatening injuries and was put into an induced coma.

Mr Travis added: "The victim was so ill he couldn't be transferred from the West Cumberland Hospital to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle or the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

"He's been taken out of the coma, but police are unable to speak to him because of the severity of his injuries."

Dryden was remanded in custody and is due to appear before Carlisle Crown court on August 15.
