A drunken man who tried to kiss a boy in a town centre street has admitted a charge of common assault.

Antony Aiken, 36, of Dean Street, Workington, initially engaged the teenager in conversation before shaking his hand in the town on the afternoon of December 12.

Aiken then put his arm around the boy’s shoulders and tried to kiss him on the lips.

There was said to have been a “glancing blow” although the victim – in his early teens – managed to get away and raise the alarm.

He was left shaken by an incident, which was captured on CCTV.

When arrested, Aiken told police he had drunk heavily that day, consuming a small bottle of brandy and some Baileys.

He could not remember what had happened but accepted it was him on the CCTV footage.

Aiken pleaded guilty to one count common assault when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today in front of Judge Peter Hughes QC.

Brendan Burke, defending, confirmed the offence had been “drink-related”.

Judge Hughes agreed that a background report should be prepared on Aiken who, he said, was guilty of a “very unpleasant incident”.

The case was adjourned and Aiken was remanded on conditional bail.

He will return to the crown court for sentence on August 21.
