Potentially fatal drugs were among kit stolen from the back of an ambulance, as its crew attended a 999 call.

Cumbria Police has confirmed that the medical response bag, which was stolen at about 6.50am yesterday, was recovered today in a Workington park.

The ambulance was parked in Scawfell Avenue, Workington, at the time of the theft. Paramedics were attempting to resuscitate a patient in cardiac arrest when the thief struck.

While the bag was recovered in Vulcan Park this morning, police have now issued an urgent warning about drugs which were taken from inside.

A Cumbria police spokesman said: "Some aspirin and GTN tablets had been taken from the bag.

"GTN tablets can be fatal if taken incorrectly and we would appeal to anyone who finds the medication to hand it to police or a pharmacy."
