Arsonists are thought to be behind a blaze at a popular Cumbrian golf club.

Police are investigating a fire at Silloth Golf Club on Station Road at 8.25pm on Saturday.

Several fire crews from across the area tackled the blaze and were at the scene for four hours.

A police spokeswoman said various patches of grass around the club were on fire with an area of about 700m by 100m alight.

He said four men were seen running from the scene.

They were reported by witnesses as wearing a black hooded top with white writing, a navy hooded top, a black tracksuit and a grey hooded top with white stripes.

Fire crews from Aspatria, Maryport, Wigton, Whitehaven and Keswick all attended.
