A teenager, who stole a car and drove it while over the alcohol limit but without insurance, caused £5,000-worth of damage.

Lewis Flockhart, 18, of Row Brow Park, Dearham, has now been disqualified from driving for a year and five months.

Magistrates also handed him a curfew for eight weeks under which he must be at home between 7pm and 7am every day until Thursday, March 9.

He must also do 80 hours of unpaid work in the next year.

Flockhart took an Alfa Romeo on Friday, December 23, and drove it in Dearham.

He was caught with 62mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35mcg.

Flockhart pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before magistrates sitting in Workington.

He must pay compensation of £400 and costs of £85.

Cumbria Police ran a campaign in December to crack down on drink-driving. A total of 48 drivers either tested positive for being over the alcohol limit or refused to take the test.
