A teenager has admitted viciously raping and attacking a woman as she walked her dog.

The woman, who was in her 50s, was subjected to a catalogue of violence after the 18-year-old youth pounced on her in Workington.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Jack Ian Walker, 18, confessed to five offences before Judge Peter Davies.

Walker pleaded guilty to rape, attempted rape, a further sexual assault and grievous bodily harm.

His victim ended up in the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where she was treated for her injuries.

The attack took place on the evening of July 15 on open grassland near Church Street and North Watt Street.

Walker also admitted a common assault on police officer Neil Butterfield on the same day.

No details about the circumstances surrounding any of the five offences were outlined during the short court hearing.

Prosecutor Tim Evans said he supported the preparation of comprehensive background information on the teenager referring to it as a "very troubling" case.

Walker's defence lawyer, Marion Weir, asked for an adjournment so that reports could be prepared.

Walker, whose address was given as Dean Street, Workington, appeared in the dock wearing a short-sleeved sports top and grey jogging bottoms.

Having been brought into court by a security officer, he was asked to take his hands out of his pockets by the judge.

"You must co-operate with the psychiatric report. Doctors will come to see you," Judge Davies said at the conclusion of the hearing.

"If you don't, all that means is that things are going to be delayed and the court is not going to be sympathetic."

He will be sentenced on October 7. He was remanded in custody.
