Michelle Skeer will remain as temporary chief constable of Cumbria Constabulary until the end of February.
She was appointed last month after Chief Constable Jerry Graham took a period of leave as the result of an illness and was expected to return at the end of January.
Richard Rhodes, the county's crime commissioner, said: "I've spoken to Mr Graham and I am pleased to say that he is making a good recovery. I have asked Mrs Skeer to remain and the position will be reviewed at the end of February."
