A Workington butcher has vowed not to be beaten by burglars who raided his shop.

Marshalls Butchers on Corporation Road was raided overnight on Friday and thieves took two charity boxes and managed to steal £2,500 from its safe.

Staff were shocked to find the shop had been broken into but refused to let the criminals stop them from opening.

Sam Peel, manager, said it was business as usual despite the raid and staff were serving customers on Saturday.

He said: “We are still here and we are still trading.

"They only took the money. They didn’t take the meat or anything else.”

But the incident has disturbed staff.

Mr Peel added: “It is just a horrible feeling to know somebody has been in the shop and has done what they have done."

Mr Peel said the shop would now have to look at how it would take extra security measures.

A police investigation to trace the burglar is under way.

A Cumbria police spokesman said: "Entry being gained from the rear of the premises.

"Cumbria police are seeking witnesses who were in the area at the time."

Anyone with information can call police on 101.
