A Workington man has been jailed for attacking a teenager who was feeding ducks at a Lake District beauty spot.
Carl Ward, 34, of Greengarth, Great Clifton, pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding, for which he was sent to prison for 10 months at Carlisle Crown Court yesterday.
The court heard that as victim Joseph Martin handed out bread to birds close to the shore at The Glebe, a popular tourist spot at Bowness-on-Windermere, he was given a savage beating by Ward.
Ward, a father-of-three, had stepped in after his then-pregnant wife tackled Mr Martin over perceived littering.
Ward stuck thumbs into the throat and eye of the 18-year-old, which was seen by witnesses. Mr Martin was then punched several times.
Ward also grabbed the teenager in a "sleeper" headlock which caused him to fear that he might black out. Mr Martin suffered multiple injuries and needed almost a dozen stitches.
Judge Peter Davies told Ward: "You have to go to custody. People must know that violence in public cannot be tolerated."
