People are being told to be on their guard against cold callers offering to buy gold, silver, antiques and other items.
Cumbria Trading Standards and Cumbria Police have serious concerns that some older or vulnerable residents may have been targeted by men delivering leaflets then returning to collect the leaflet and/or items.
A police spokeswoman said: "Please be mindful of older family members, friends, neighbours or anyone you think may be at risk. If you wish to sell any jewellery or antiques please consider contacting a local business or personal recommendation from someone you know and trust. This way you can obtain valuations and decide in your own time whether the price is acceptable."
It is thought these callers may be operating anywhere within the south and west of Cumbria.
Trading Standards and the police advice is never to deal with cold callers.
If you have been approached by these sellers or have any information please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or Cumbria Police on 101.
