A woman has been convicted of defrauding the charity which handed out grants after the devastating Storm Desmond floods.

Mum-of-two Nicola Moore, 33, made two false representations to the Cumbria Community Foundation around the turn of this year.

Moore lodged two applications for cash handouts after her rented property in Workington was submerged in early December 2015.

In the first she claimed for flood-damaged belongings and received a grant despite some of the items on her list being owned by her landlord.

On January 26, Moore then sent in a second application form but included property she had already claimed and received money for.

That claim was declined after charity representatives became suspicious.

Moore denied two fraud charges and went on trial at Carlisle Crown Court.

She was unanimously convicted of both counts yesterday by a jury which heard all the evidence in the case.

Moore, now of Windsor Road, Workington, was remanded in custody by Judge Peter Davies and is due to be sentenced this coming Friday.

"I take the view these are mean and dishonest offences," Judge Davies told her.
