Thieves have been targeting works vans, stealing power tools worth thousands of pounds from vehicles parked across Maryport.

Police are warning van owners to be extra vigilant, up their security measures and never leave valuable items in sight.

The warning follows a spate of thefts over the weekend, when a total of nine Ford Transit vans were targeted in the town.

The incidents occurred in Ennerdale Road, Peart Road, Windermere Road, Crosby Street, Coronation Street, Ewanrigg Road, the Promenade and Kirkby Street, where two vans were broken into.

Inspector Charlotte Lory said: “The value of the items stolen run into the thousands and we are actively making enquiries into tracing who is responsible. Our advice to van owners is to ensure that you are doing everything you can to protect your property. Clearly these offenders are targeting work vans as many contain expensive items.

“There are a number of ways in which you can protect yourself including a simple change to how you park your van.

"Don’t park your van where a thief can gain easy access to it without being disturbed, parking with the doors near to a wall or gate if possible to prevent the doors being opened. Also, where possible, try parking under street lights so offenders can easily be seen.

“Thieves are often opportunists so please ensure you lock doors and don’t leave valuable possessions in sight. Ideally remove property from the vehicle where possible. Following this up by using stickers to state that your van is empty is worth considering.”

Anyone with information about the thefts or who noticed any suspicious activity in these areas over the weekemd can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
