Workington MP Sue Hayman is urging people to highlight concerns about the temporary closure of West Cumbria Magistrates’ Court.

The Workington court shut on Monday for two months to remove asbestos from the building.

Civil and family cases have been transferred to Carlisle Combined Court and crime cases to Carlisle Magistrates’ Court until April 18.

In 2015, the government earmarked the building for closure to save money but a campaign led by the Times & Star and Mrs Hayman stopped it.

Mrs Hayman said: “It’s not suitable for people to have to travel to Carlisle.

“We need to use this as an opportunity to demonstrate this in case the Government does propose the closure of our court again.

“I would urge people to get in touch with me if they have concerns as it would be extremely helpful to gather further evidence.”

Gail Inglis, chairman of the magistrates’ North and West Cumbria Bench, said work to upgrade the wifi system had involved breaking into the walls, which meant the asbestos had to be removed.

Celia Tibble, chairman of Cumbria’s police and crime panel, urged people to share the impacts of the temporary closure on the We Saved West Cumbria Magistrates Court Facebook page.
