PUPILS from Cockermouth School swapped their pens for whisks at the annual chef competition.
The competition, organised by the town’s Rotary club, saw year nine students battle it out to be crowned top chef.
Students had to cook a two-course meal for under £5 in one-and-a-half hours, while the judges walked around and then carried out a taste test.
The winner was Aaron Rotherham, 14, who cooked leek and potato soup, a homemade roll and lemon chicken with asparagus.
Second place went to Kian Spencer, 14 who cooked prawn curry and lemon cheesecake.
Rachael Ames, 14, came third with her Indian lamb meatballs with mango chutney and stem ginger sauce, followed by amaretti stuffed peaches.
Aaron, who received a cookbook and a £20 book voucher, said: “I am pleased. I did not expect to win.”
The competition has been running for nine years, and this year a special award - The Mike Wilde Plate - was awarded to the winner.
Mr Wilde, the school’s former headteacher, died of cancer last year.
Head of food technology, Susan Higley, said: “Mr Wilde began the competition and he was passionate about it. He would cancel everything to be there on the night and would sit right to the end.”
