A West Cumbrian school which failed its government inspection in 2009 has since turned into a good school where pupils, parents and carers are “exceptionally” happy.

St Matthew’s Primary School in Westnewton, near Aspatria, was told by inspectors in 2009 that it was failing to give pupils an adequate education.

Now, three years later, Ofsted visited the 30-pupil school at the end of last month and said it was a “good” school, just falling short of excellence.

The report said: “Parents and carers believe that their children are well taught and the inspector found this to be the case. All pupils believe they learn a lot in lessons and they do.”

Throughout the school pupils made good progress, said the report.

By the time they leave their overall attainment in core subjects is above average, although English is stronger than mathematics.

The lessons are fast paced and challenging and enjoyed by pupils who are also well-behaved.

The inspectors praised the headteacher, assistant head and governors and were impressed by the way children were integrated into the school as new pupils and moved from reception to the older classes.

The report added: “The proportion of pupils reaching the higher levels in mathematics by the time they leave school could be greater.”

Carole Satterthwaite, headteacher, said: “As a small school, teamwork is vital and this was recognised by the inspector. The achievement of our pupils, quality of teaching, parental support and leadership and management are all strengths.

“We are continuing to develop the school and in September we will open a new nursery.”
