THE BEST: Flimby Primary School has won a national Rock Challenge award for its costumes, designed and made by teaching assistant Pat Fletcher

Forty-eight Flimby pupils performed Giraffes Can’t Dance to beat 11 other schools from across north and West Cumbria in the annual Rock Challenge.

They also picked up awards for concept and interpretation, choreography and costumes.

The costumes were nominated for the national competition thanks to teaching assistant Pat Fletcher who designed and made them.

Mrs Fletcher, of Lawson Road, Maryport, created 48 costumes for the production. She said she was “chuffed to bits” to hear that her animal costumes had won.

Jacqui Wilson, headteacher, said her office was turned into a sewing room.

She added: “Where there used to be computers there were sewing machines and material everywhere.”

The school also won the Cumbria Safer and Stronger Communities award for concept interpretation, the Be Your Best Foundation Award for costume design and the Cumbria Safer and Stronger Communities award for choreography.

Rock Challenge is run by the Be Your Best Foundation to encourage young people to lead healthy lifestyles.
