A Maryport schoolgirl who refused to give up on a business idea, despite all the odds, has won a special award at the Cumbria finals of a Young Enterprise competition.

Netherhall school pupil Amy Wozencroft, 18, was managing director of the school’s Kotton On business enterprise, which reached the county finals.

But when some of her fellow pupils pulled out of the Cumbria competition, saying that they were too busy studying for exams, Amy decided she would go it alone.

She said she believed in the group’s product – designer cotton bags which could have original art or personal photographs on them and which were fashionable and good for the environment.

She said: “After our story appeared in the Times & Star we got more orders and everything was going well.

“Then people started to pull out because of exams so I decided I would go to the Cumbrian finals alone.”

She said she was determined to keep Kotton On going until the end of the school year, despite her own exam commitments.

“I want to see it through to the end,” she said.
