A Maryport primary school has been rated one of the best in the country by Government inspectors.
Our Lady & St Patrick’s School was visited by Ofsted last month and inspectors said it was outstanding.
It is one of only eight per cent of primary schools in the country to achieve this grade.
It was judged outstanding in overall effectiveness, achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management.
The inspectors found that parents and carers had “extremely positive” views about the school.
The report said pupils were enthusiastic learners, and by the end of year six attainment was significantly above the national average.
Teaching was based on excellent knowledge of the pupils’ needs and an outstanding, exciting curriculum.
This, inspectors concluded, contributed to outstanding spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Each child was cherished as an individual and taught to respect themselves and others.
Jacqueline Hampson, headteacher, was described as “dynamic and determined in her pursuit of the best for all pupils”.
The report said: “She is fully supported by a very able leadership team and the commitment of governors and all staff.”
Our Lady & St Patrick’s has a roll of 191 pupils, aged three to 11, and has had an increase in pupils for whom English is an additional language, mainly from Eastern Europe.
The proportion of pupils eligible for school meals is twice the national average and the proportion of children with special needs is also above average.
